My Garden
The morning wakes and all around is birdsong loud and sweet.
In haste I rise and go outside to seek my garden seat.
The flowers nod their greetings, my obsequious devotees.
I hear the trees a'whispering their secrets to the breeze.
Beds of annuals and perennials, host both butterflies and bees
And the old herbaceous border makes a multicoloured frieze.
My roses stand like royalty, making all a pure delight
And a blanket green lies in between these clouds of colour bright.
The changing seasons paint for me a passing picture show
Springtime bulbs. Summer flowers. Autumns afterglow.
My garden is my pleasure, my haven and my bower.
I work awhile. I rest awhile. I treasure every hour.
For miracles are commonplace, where tiny seeds I sow.
The secrets Nature guards so well, we mortals cannot know
What magic makes seeds germinate? How does my garden grow?
And I often wonder who creates, "the blossoms bright trouseau".
The potting shed and greenhouse stand behind my garden seat.
In them I am, by the world forgot, - and I from it retreat.
On land beyond the potting shed, where others do not go,
Fine products for my table, are growing neatly, row on row.
Weeding, hoeing, planting, I find contentment as I toil.
Time races by forgotten when I cultivate the soil.
The compost heap and farmyard supply my basic needs.
No artificial products ever touch my land or seeds.
But best of all is harvest time, 'tis then I see outspread,
Rewards for all the work I've done behind the potting shed.
My harvest work is happy work, a joyous occupation.
And harvest hymns are happy hymns, a heartfelt, glad ovation.
